Local Andover Business Spotlight: The Rusted Rooster

If you are looking for a charming coffee shop where you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and eat a tasty meal, then The Rusted Rooster is the perfect place! The Andover community voted The Rusted Rooster the 2018 business of the year, and they were voted a local favorite by Nextdoor in 2019. Their amazing coffee is air roasted and from a local Kansas roaster. The Rusted Rooster has a cozy, down home, relaxed feel with interesting and fun decor. They also have a delightful patio and convenient drive-thru. You will be happily satisfied with their wide variety of hot and cold drinks, including enticing seasonal creations like a Salted Caramel Pumpkin Latte or a cup of Witch's Brew. The Rusted Rooster's yummy breakfast menu offers several unique dishes, like The Bravocado and The Hack Attack. You will want to explore and taste your way through their delectable salad and sandwich menu too. With sandwich choices like the Trojan Turkey and the Jaguar Jack, it is clear that The Rusted Rooster embraces the local Andover community. We recently visited with Lissa Hackney, one of the owners of The Rusted Rooster, to learn more about this wonderful local business.
1. Business Name? The Rusted Rooster 2. How many years have you been in business? We opened as a vintage retail store in February of 2013, and then changed over to the coffee shop/cafe in June of 2018. 3. What is your business’s mission statement? Save the World. Eat. Shop. Drink. LOCAL. 4. What inspired you to start this business? I felt that Andover really needed a fun place to hang out with good food and good people! I wanted it to have the ole "mom and pop" vibe, not something trendy. A place where you could eat, drink, play board games, and relax in the midst of everyone's busy lives. 5. What kind of education or training prepared you to operate your business? My family owned a coffee shop in Wichita that I worked at. I have also worked in many restaurants along the way! Most of all, it would be my passion for not giving up and my belief in dreaming big that prepared me for opening this cafe. 6. How did you know that Andover was the perfect city to open your business in?
I live in Andover and I love Andover so that was an easy decision!

7. What is your favorite thing about owning and running a business in Andover?
I love the small town charm that is Andover and when you walk into the Rooster, you feel at home. It's cozy. It's happy. It's a place you want to hang out at. Many East Wichita residents attend Andover Schools so we are all like one, really big, happy family. 8. How do you feel your business has impacted our community? We are lucky to have 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 high schools, E academy, and Butler County Community College in our town, so we do a lot of work with all of these amazing schools. The support from them is indescribable. We love to help out our community in any way that we can from events, to fundraisers, to contests, to donations, to giveaways. I think that the Rusted Rooster has provided that small town community coffee shop that everyone can feel a connection with. 9. What is the most heartfelt compliment a customer has given you or your business? The best compliment I receive often is how amazing my staff is. We literally have the best crew that know our customers by name when they walk in and have their drink ready before they even have to order it. 10. What is the most amusing or funny experience you have had happen at your business or while you were operating your business? It's funny now, but it wasn't at the time. Two days before our big 1-year anniversary party, I walked into the shop around 6:00 am to find that a shelf holding about 50 bottles of syrup had crashed to the floor and broken. There was glass and syrup everywhere! It was a total nightmare but so many of my staff, customers, and chamber members stopped by to offer their help. 11. How much do you treasure your employees and the people you work with? My staff is everything to me. Running a small crew makes it easy to stay connected with each and every one of them. Each member of our crew brings something unique to our team that puts customer service at the very top of our priority list. We have the very best customers too, so it is such a pleasure to serve them everyday. 12. What is the most satisfying aspect of being a business owner? I feel happy that I've created a special place for a special community to enjoy. My job is very fun and I thank God everyday for the opportunity that He has given me and my family. The customers who have turned into friends is another big bonus. The Rusted Rooster is much more than just a brick and mortar building to me.
